Larchmont Bungalow 107 North Larchmont Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90004
You saw the above picture, and it undoubtedly stopped you in your tracks. But wait, is that cake? No, no sir, it is not. Cupcakes, maybe? Nope, wrong again. Well, my word, what on earth could it be? Are you ready to find out? Do you really want to know? Pancakes. Red and Blue Velvet PANCAKES. That's right. Your eyes are not playing mind games with you. Those are indeed pancakes.
While in LA, I met up with my friend from the Bay, Eve. She had a groupon for the Larchmont Bungalow (located in the mid-Wilshire region) and suggested we use it for our Sunday brunch rendezvous. Being the food junkie that I am, I quickly yelped the place so I could be ready for our food date. That is when I saw pictures of mysteriously delicious, bright red and blue, cake-looking "pancakes." I, like you probably are at this very moment, was baffled. I have heard of red velvet cupcakes, and red velvet cakes, and surely I have tasted both, but pancakes? Blue Velvet pancakes, at that?? I was shaking in my boots and counting down the days until I could try these suckers out. The verdict? Dare I say, they were better than any red velvet pastry I have ever tasted. Light, fluffy, and not overly sweet, even though they were topped with homemade whipped cream, a cream cheese spread, roasted walnuts, and a side of warm maple syrup. Don't let their cake-like appearance fool you into thinking that you'll be having dessert for breakfast. These really do taste like pancakes. I don't know how else to explain the melt-in-your mouth soft taste of the famous Red and Blue Velvet Larchmont pancakes. You really just need to experience it yourself.
You didn't think I just came here for pancakes, did you? If you did, I am definitely shaking my head in disappointment at you right now. If you didn't already know, a serving of pancakes is not enough to fill up this tummy. No, Eve and I went all out. She ordered the the Lobster Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, I ordered the Jambalaya Morning Scramble, and we each also got an order of Red and Blue Velvet pancakes. You can imagine the looks we received four plates were placed on our tiny little table in front of two tiny little girls. But, I was too far into food bliss to notice others' jealous looks. My Jambalaya Morning Scramble tasted like I took a bite out of New Orleans. Eve's Lobster Crab Cakes were beautifully presented and tasted just as wonderful as they looked. Overall, Eve and I were both very happy girls after our morning brunch at Larchmont. The only down side to this place is the long line. But, like everything else in life, good things are definitely worth the wait. And, don't worry about missing out on the pancakes if you don't arrive for breakfast. Larchmont serves all their yummy breakfast items all day long.
